New aid project in Nepal: “School up 3” near Jugal Himal

My “School Up” aid project in Nepal is entering its third phase. Thanks to your donations, we completed a new school in the village of Thulosirubari, northeast of Kathmandu, in 2019, and built another school in Rama, in the far west of Nepal, in 2024. Now, through my blog, I’m raising funds for a new school-building project by Nepalhilfe Beilngries: in Golche.

Like Thulosirubari, this mountain village is also located in the Sindhupalchowk district, but further north.

50 kilometers as the crow flies from Shishapangma

To help you visualize the location, here are some distance figures: From Golche, it is about 50 kilometers as the crow flies to the capital, Kathmandu, in the southwest; the driving distance is nearly twice as long. The Nepal-Tibet border town of Kodari lies about 20 kilometers northwest as the crow flies.

To the north rises the Jugal Himal mountain range. Its highest peak is Shishapangma, at 8,027 meters – the lowest of the 14 eight-thousanders and the only one located entirely in Tibet. The summit of Shishapangma is about 50 kilometers as the crow flies from Golche.

Rain is becoming a problem

There is already a school near the village, but it cannot remain as it is. “Class totally gets hampered during the raining days in buildings which do not have concrete roofs,” says Maya Syangbo. The student is in the tenth grade at Shree Bhimsen Secondary School, located at an altitude of just under 1,600 meters.

In addition to two newer concrete sections of the building, there are still several old single-story structures covered with corrugated iron, some of which leak when it rains.

Up to three hours’ walk to school

251 children and teenagers currently attend school in Golche: 132 girls and 119 boys. Nineteen teachers instruct students ranging from preschoolers to tenth graders. The school’s catchment area extends far beyond the village.

Students also come to Shree Bhimsen Secondary School from the surrounding villages of Nimlung, Kipche, Sindurche, Yarsa, Tarke, Saldada, and Khundurka. For some of them, the walk to school takes between two and three hours.

New building with eight classrooms

With support from Nepalhilfe Beilngries, a new school building with eight classrooms is now to be constructed. Four of the rooms will be used for grades 3, 4, 5, and 6; two for early childhood education; and two for science, as a computer lab, or as general classrooms.

Once the new building is ready for use, some rooms in the other wings may also be used as dormitories for children and teachers who walk long distances to attend the school.

In addition, the school needs restrooms, furniture, computer equipment, and a fence around the school grounds.

“All for students’ welfare”

“Each and every corner of the new building will be utilized for students’ welfare ,” promises Principal Basant Binod Sharma. “And very soon its impact on students will make every effort fruitful.”

Pratap Lama, the chair of the School Management Committee, is also convinced that the new project “will boost the performance of Shree Bhimsen Secondary School.”

Every euro counts

So, let’s get started! Every euro you donate to “School up 3” will actually go toward this project in Jugal Rural Municipality, to which Golche belongs.

As with my first two fundraising campaigns with Nepalhilfe Beilngries, I’ll keep you updated here on the blog at irregular intervals on how the project is progressing. That way, you can see that your money is truly “working.” When making your donations, please don’t forget to specify “School up 3” as the intended purpose.
