The only things missing are windows and doors, furniture and paint on the walls. The first building of the new school in the village of Rama in the far west of Nepal is almost finished. This was made possible by your donations to my project “School up – far west”, which is also supported by the Austrian top mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner.
Lessons are still often held outdoors. But when it rains or the wind is too strong, the new rooms already provide shelter for the school classes. Currently, construction work is at a standstill. They are to be resumed in April, when the weather is more stable again.
Slope behind the school will be secured
Then the second school building with another eight classrooms will be constructed. In the end, the school, which is being built by the German aid organization Nepalhilfe Beilngries, will offer space for more than 350 students from Rama and the surrounding hamlets – with sanitary facilities and drinking water connections. The aim is to make the buildings earthquake-proof.
In addition, the hillside behind the school grounds will be secured. The money for this protective measure has been provided by the local authorities in Humla District. Landslides are a recurring occurrence in the region. “More than half of the land is on slopes of more than 30 percent,” explains Lalkesh Jaisi, mayor of the Tanjakot municipality, which includes the village of Rama. The old school had to be moved because of a landslide.
Every euro goes to good use
Even though stage one will soon be reached with the completion of the first building, there is still a long way to go. In order for the project to succeed, we continue to rely on your donations.
